Auditory What-Stream (Ventral)
Location
- starts in anterolateral Herschl’s Gyrus → STGa → pPPo (Ahveninen et al. (2006) - PNAS)
- originate in multiple STG seed regions and prob. terminate in anterior/posterior IFG (Fruhholz and Grandjean, 2013b) (Frühholz (2015) - NeuroImage)
- STS → pITL, portions of the MTG and ITG

Function
- involved in decoding of spectrally complex sounds (“auditory objects) which includes the decoding of speech sounds (“speech perception”) and their ultimate linking to meaning in humans. (Rolls et al. (2023) - Cerebral Cortex)
- the ventral pathway contains hierarchical circuits that are specialized for auditory perception and scene analysis.
- → proposed model: heirarchie in the ventral stream. first encoding then perceptual judgements (Cohen et al. (2016) - Springer)
- sound-invariant meaning, e.g. speech semantics (Frühholz (2015) - NeuroImage, Rauschecker & Scott (2009) - Nature Neuroscience)
