The fusiform face area is specifically activated by faces, but not by objects or places. It is located in the fusiform gyrus. It is part of, but not identical to Brodmann area 37.

It could be that the FFA is an expert area and we are all exerts on faces. This is why this area is so active. But it is also active when car-experts see cars or bird-experts see birds.
The results suggest that the level of categorization and expertise, rather than objects’ superficial properties, determine the specialization of the fusiform face area (FFA).
